About this song
This song is brand new and as sometimes songs do, it came as quite a surprise. I was just playing a little guitar and the chords suddenly came out of nowhere. I started singing and the words and melody almost came out as one. I had planned to stop recording at 10 songs for the 1st album but I had to do just this one more.

I started this right before Christmas on Monday night I wrote it, On Tuesday I recorded. Jeff Soriano came over right after Christmas and played some really really nice guitar on the track and then I mixed it. The way I work on music, I can only put in 2 or 3 hours a couple of nights a week. So This song was recorded start to finish in about 8 or 9 hours.

Seems like the world is in a state of deep disorder. I wonder if I am just seeing it that way sometimes or if that's how it is, but one thing is certain. If there was a pathway ahead that I could choose that would make the future certain for everyone the way I felt it was for me when I was a child, I would take that road. I think we are all... tied up in chains we've made ourselves...

I wrote this song after watching several very close friends spiral out of control losing everything. It seems to me that life is a never ending struggle for some of us. Something I have always felt is that tomorrow is a new day anything is possible. If today was awesome, tomorrow might be better, if today sucked, tomorrow...

I feel this thing that pulls at everyone except maybe the saints. Sometimes we are lucky not to fall, sometimes we actually have some control over the moment that gives us peace, but in truth we are just the lucky ones if we can sit and reflect on such things. I feel like I am lucky to have this life and to be alive in this time.

This is a sad song for those who feel like maybe they are not so lucky. Life is hard. Life is beautiful.

I wrote a song called Photograph about 10 years ago. I recorded it and then lost the song and all copies I had when a computer drive crashed. From 1997 to 2000 I recorded about 20 songs on my first computer recording system. Although I have managed to find a few of the songs that were on that old hard drive, most of the music was lost permanently when the drive crashed.

I had no intention of recording this song, but a few weeks ago, I was trying to remember how that old Photograph song went. I stumbled onto this progression, and within a few minutes,  I had written a completely new song called Photograph. I think I re-used one line from the original song, but I guess I will have to work that out with myself later... " I'll see me in court!"

It has occurred to me lately that I am profoundly more aware and in some respects I have lived a deeper life though the photographs that I've been exposed to. I can not imagine what life would be like if I had not been able to see all that I've seen. It is one of the greatest gifts of the modern world.

While I was recording this song, I had started out playing the music at a much slower speed. I recorded a few tracks and then decided the song was too slow. Modern computer music technology lets you "time stretch" sound so you can speed something up, but it won't change the pitch or sound like Mickey Mouse. I tried it on this song and it worked pretty well, so I recorded a few more tracks, and then I decided it was still to slow, so I sped up the whole song once more. Remarkably everything sounded normal. In the end I had recorded various parts of this song at 3 different tempos.

I wrote this song about 15 or 16 years ago. For the longest time, I wanted to learn how to play guitar. When I was about 27, I bought my first electric guitar, and this was one of the first songs I wrote on it. Since I didn't know how to play... I basically wrote this song with just one bar chord. One of the miserable curses of being a song writer, is you always seem to have a new more betterer song to record. I Just Want To Sleep has been floating around in my head all this and every now and then I would play it or sing it to my self in the shower and say... I really have to get around to recording that song... but time flies and then you wake up one day and you are 40 something... yikes... and your explaining to your high school history teacher why your paper is 16 years late.

A few weeks ago I decided it was time to dust off this oldie and git-r-done. Yes... I am quoting Larry The Cable Guy. It was late on a Sunday afternoon, and my wife Tanya works the overnight shift at a fancy pants downtown hotel in Manhattan so she wast taking a little cat nap. Our apartment / recording studio is not quite big enough for me to play guitar while she is sleeping. Although I had always heard this song finished in my head, and I have, admittedly, rocked out air guitar style while doing it, without the guitar I couldn't really start the song. So I decided to mess around on my electric piano with some headphones and see if anything new came of it.. I stumbled on the piano phrase that you hear now when the song starts, and suddenly the the song took on a completely new direction. The words and melody stayed the same, but I changed much of the underlying music just at that last moment when I was about to get started.

I wanted the song to have this kind of row row row your boat thing at the end. I thought at first, I would just end the song with this vocal group thing, but after a few days of listening to the finished song, it didn't feel.... finished, so I went back and started messing around with the ending. I wound up changing the way the song ends a few times before I found the right ending... but then I found myself stuck. I had recorded all the instruments 3 weeks ago, and now I wanted to add a new chord progression that I had not played before.

To remedy one of my problems, I cut tiny pieces of a bass note, just one note that lasted a split second, and pasted it together like 30 times. Then I cross faded each little tiny snipped so that it would sound like the note had been played longer, just so I could get one long note to end the bass part at the new ending of the song. I suppose I could have played a new bass part. Well enough about the music.. I wish I could tell you exactly what I was thinking when I wrote these lyrics, but although I can't remember why, I can remember that I was at work, sitting in my cubicle making sales calls. Yes... that might have been me you hung up on.. Anyway, I starting hearing the words coming together, so I took a break and went for a walk. I was working on St James St. in Boston at the time, so I walked a few blocks over to the Boston Common, and I sat down near the pond there where they have the swan boats, and I just wrote out the song.

Back in my late 20's, I use to have several repetitive dreams. Some of them were extremely vivid and surreal like a normal dream, some where kind of scary but there were 3 dreams  I kept having over and over again. I don't remember my dreams to often, but these really stuck with me. I was known in my younger days for the incredibly useless talent of sleeping anywhere without any comfort or thought. Sleep on cue, If you don't need me, I'll be shutting down for a while, and click, I was out... You don't know what you've got until it's gone. Not that sleep is this interruption to the never ending stream of songs, thoughts about garbage in the ocean, politics, work, that effin sob who cut me off at the super market, bills, life... well, sometimes...I just want to sleep...

If I had enough time... I think I could record new song every week. More than any other time in my life, I feel as if things are moving so fast that I can hardly catch a glimpse of moments as they fly by at light speed. I have been writing lately about my perspective on life. Mostly how much we trade of ourselves as we negotiate the cost of each day, until finally we wake up and discover that we are David Bryne from the Talking Heads.   "And you may find yourself behind the wheel of a large automobile. And you may find yourself in a beautiful house, with a beautiful Wife. And you may ask yourself-well... how did I get here?"

I have come to realize the genius of that lyric... It seems that no matter how long someone has lived, we always think that they left us too soon. I think I have lived such a full life in my short time on this planet and I have had the good fortune to realize the value of each moment as precious and fleeting. I strive to be in the moment. I am often, however, distracted by the hardness of reality. Sometimes as I reach those moments when I catch myself aware.. I feel profoundly grateful, if I did not walk too far down the road forgetting to smell the roses, as they say.

I was at a Costco shopping with my wife Tanya and Tanya's mother. There was no music playing and I found myself humming a melody and some words were sort of coming with it. I just happened to look down an isle and saw an electric piano in the store next to a variety of other music instruments. How convenient....I went and sat down and played for a few minutes and basically wrote this song.

I met my wife on the internet. When I saw her for the first time, she was looking the other way and had not seen me yet. I'd only seen her picture on line and I thought at that moment.."please let this be her..." I try not to get too sappy but the occasional love song is bound to happen... I love my wife

2 Years ago I had taken a new job. Shortly after taking this job I became very sick. I was about a quarter way through the second record I had been producing with Zach Macko and Far North. Tanya, my wife and I had gotten married only a few months earlier. I now saw my life as having responsibility to someone more than just myself and my cats. Something that didn't seem to bother me until I became a malfunctioning human. If you are reading this and you have 2 of everything you should have 2 of, and 1 of everything you should have 1 of....you have everything you need.

I wrote this melody and most of the words one day walking from home to the drug store. In my neighborhood there was massive construction going on at the time. My 4 block walk required navigating all of these mazes of tunnels built inside these giant buildings. I felt like the world was a big place standing in the shadows of these awesome structures. Much had changed in my life in just a short time.Watching these buildings transform each day as I would walk around was a humbling metaphor for the constant change that life seems to bring into our lives.

Most days I am at peace with the world and it's great uncertainties... Life is beautiful. At this moment, however, I had forgot my own sense of what mattered and caught up in the struggle of just this one day, I found myself in over my head.

When I got back from my short trip. I wrote the words down so I wouldn't forget, but I had not figured out how the music might go. Just the melody. Later that day Jeff Soriano came by. Not knowing I had written anything, he played me a song he had written on acoustic guitar..When he was done playing I realized we had written two pieces that fit together perfectly.

Scott Levy and Adam Reiter had just joined the Zach band and we were tracking songs so they both played on this track. Scott played drums and brings a wonderful natural feel to the song. Adam played bass and is one of the best bass players I have ever worked with. Jeff played all the guitars. I sing the vocals and played some keyboards. This was recorded and mixed in my home studio in New York City.

My sister Gina is the American Dream. Pretty Popular Straight A's Went to Collage, Great Job. Married a Great guy. Great dogs. 3 Houses! A lake house and a house in Florida. Boat Land Rover. And one day she tells me that it all means nothing if she is just a slave to her life. Since this is a central theme of my own quest in the meaning of life, I was deeply touched that my sister who had conquered all the trappings of the perfect American lobotomy had opened her eyes and realized what was important before it was too late.

I have been a piano player since I was a child. My piano teacher's name was Natale Barrent. She was Polish and had been in a concentration camp during World War II. I am a 4th Generation student of Beethoven, although you would never know it if you watched me try and play one of his sonatas. (I think Beethoven just might roll over.. in his grave) Every week Ms. Barrent would scold me.. " Vhy don't you pdrractice Chals.... i don't undastand" (My sad attempt at typing with a Polish accent) I was almost immediately drawn to pop music. I use to sit for hours with the record player and try and figure out how to play Elton John songs.

Why am I telling you this you ask??? Because for some reason as a singer in a band for the first 10 years of my life, with the exception of perhaps the first song I ever wrote, I only wrote music by either singing with the band, or programing the music into a sequencer and singing along. Once I started writing my own music at about the age of 27, for some strange reason, I started writing on the guitar, even though at that point, I really could not play guitar. It just seamed that the guitar inspired me to write songs, but somehow the piano did not, and believe me... I am a much better piano player.

In the past year, I just found the inspiration to write music at the piano. Sleep Walking is one of 6 new songs which I wrote with only the piano. For the first time in my life, I am able to sit at the piano and play and... sing a song. I think my piano teacher would be happy.

I wrote this song for my amazing wife Tanya. Words can not explain how much I love my wife. She has been my inspiration since the day we met. I have, for the first time in my life, written a love song about a woman I was actually in love with at the time I wrote the song... and actually with at the time I wrote the song.

This song started by complete accident. I was messing around with a guitar effects program called Guitar Rig. I usually play acoustic guitar... and mostly bar chords, but I stumbled on this picking thing with a distorted guitar sound. It only took me about a half hour to write this song. Sometimes I will start a song and not finish it for years. I like those times when the song seems to come out without a great struggle.

I say this for all my friends who have suffered through my delusions and my plans and my plans and my ideas and my inventions. No one can deny. All the years I've tried to find the silver lining...

In this song you might get the impression I can in fact play guitar, but in reality, I really hack my way through the guitar parts and mostly just catch the happy accidents and cut and paste them into the right places...

I was day dreaming going no where on a high speed express train...

For each group of music I will try and talk about the process of making the music as it relates to that group of songs. In all of the bands, and collaborations, their is always a group of musicians playing on the records, and in some cases other people who contributed to the production and engineering of the records.

My new music and the songs listed under just my name, I've mostly recorded by myself. On a few songs, someone plays guitar or bass, or on one song drums, but on most of these tracks, I am playing the guitars, bass, drums, which are programed, piano and keyboards, vocals, background vocals, and I am doing all of the recording and production. My recent music is recorded in my home studio which is in New York City. My studio's control room has windows facing the street.

I am about 5 blocks from the Empire State Building and the windows in the studio directly face that incredible structure. It is an awesome view... very inspirational. The one down side is the street is noise... day and night. By day, traffic, horns, sirens, more horns, and more sirens, car alarms, street vendors and my personal favorite, the loud beeping noise that trucks make when they back up. The street I live on is surrounded by wholesale vendors taking in truck loads of boxes from over seas containers. At night they put out the empty boxes from the shipments. An army of garbage trucks starts coming at about 9:00 AM, and they continue until about 4:00 AM.

Since I work full time, I only work on music at night.  I have a sound proof booth, but when I record my own music, I need to run the computer, so I sit in the control room. Often when I am working, I will need to take a break and wait for a garbage truck to to its thing. The sound is so loud, it bleeds through everything when I am recording. It's not the ideal room for recording audio, but the vibe in the room is so nice, it's a good trade...

The songs I have posted as Never Was are a mixture of older Demos and Newer songs. Chopping Block was written around 97. I think I had just put together my newest digital studio. I had my entire studio built into this giant rolling wooden thing. It was the size of an upright piano, but the whole studio fit inside of it. We lived in a pretty big loft in New York, I still live there, but we split the space up so it's not so big anymore, but it was cool you could roll the whole studio around.

I had this line in my head for years.I've got Shakespeare tied up on the tip of my tongue. It fit right in this song but I probably wrote the line 6 or 7 years earlier. I had meant to finish this song a little better, but I had a hard drive crash and I lost the original files to a bunch of songs. It's hard to go back sometimes and do it again. Maybe someday..

I wrote this song for a girl I had only met on the phone...what an idiot. This was recorded in my Studio on Selwyn St in Roslindale MA sometime around 1991. Chris Blue played guitar on this song. I met him through my friend Robert Fisher from Willard Grant Conspiracy. Chris played 2 very nice solos on the record. I couldn't decide which one I liked better, so I put them both in the song.

I was working at a place selling software over the phone. We had this ancient DOS based system for sending clients information. If I needed to send a client a new letter. The system display would show me in bright green :Let FLY - Which meant generate a letter on the fly. At least that's what they told me in training. So I guess I had been staring at that all day long when I wrote this. Although I make references in a number of songs to flying. I am not a bird, but in fact I am human..

When you spend too much time in your basement studio, the mixing board can become your source for lyrical inspiration. Lo Mid Hi was what the Eq knobs on board were labeled. This stared out as an ode to my growing confusion about life. I think however it may have defined a milestone as I have gone from a Lo Mid Hi to a Lo Fi Hi and I still have no idea what I am talking about sometimes. Knee deep in quicksand... Head in the clouds.

I will say that I could have possibly done something less cliche and the obviously cliche moment. Don't worry if you don't hear it, it's just genius. But this time it was no disk crash. I recorded this one on an ADAT, but then I sold the ADAT. I may have the tape. I have been holding on to a stack of VCR tapes in hopes that I will have a chance to play them off ADAT once more, if they are not already taped over that is...

This song is about a magic night. 1991. My friend Peter had dragged me out of the house kicking and screaming. He wanted to go to Beacon Hill in Boston to find a roof party that he had been invited to,but he didn't have the address or the persons phone number...Brilliant. Peter insisted we would be able to hear the party.. For some reason I went along. I was certain this would be a waste of time, but I indulged my friend and we walked and listened for party like sounds. Suddenly in the distance, I could hear the sounds of a party coming from somewhere.... We followed our ears around this corner and that corner and rather like a video game.. a lone apartment building stood around the next corner.. door open inviting us inside.

At said party I met an girl from Holland named Tinta. She was only staying in Boston for 3 days. I asked her if she had seen any of Boston and she had not. So we left the party and took a tour. Everywhere we went it seemed like the city was a move set and we were the stars. We walked all the way to the water front where the ships were docked. It was 3:00 or 4:00 AM, but the secure area was not locked so we walked right in. It was just magical. All the boats were giant wooden sail ships. Across the harbor there was this giant circus tent glowing like fairy tale castle. I had never seen it before so we walked back to my car and drove to it. When we got to where the giant circus tent was set up, we found it also was not locked so we slipped right in. it was like a slow motion experience..  The sun was coming up by this time and we left just as it was becoming dawn.

Before I start this night I planed to stay home, and in being dragged out against my will wound with up this wonderful experience. Soon I was to leave Boston and this memory would stay with my as one of the fondest of my 12 years living there. Tinta went home to Holland she wrote me a letter, and I moved to New Jersey. This was the first recording I made in the pool house. More on the pool house later...I sent her a recording of the song. She never contacted me again after that. I wrote her several letters but nothing. I have always wondered what happened..

This song I really want to re record. It's very old. I think I did this demo around 1986. I had a dream that I was at a concert. I guess it was a reggae concert because I woke up singing this song. To my knowledge it is original song, but as far as I am concerned someone sang it to me in a dream. I knew all the words and the melody the way the song starts and ends. All I did was copy what was in my dream. I have had many music dreams. Some where I remember thinking in my dream "I hope I can remember this when I wake up" but I don't remember my dreams often so this song was a gift.

Listen to me people.Life can be so care free. If we forget all the hatred we've learned from society. No need to be greedy, there is more than enough. Share your good fortune and try to remember.. love is free.

The story of Lynka, although I had met her before when she sang on one of the DIE tracks, really begins here. In 1997 I had started or planned to work with Lynka on some music, but before we actually got started, she got arrested in Paris France at Charles de Gaulle Airport with a bag full of ecstasy. She got invited to go to Belgium with some friends. They all went knowing that they were going to do this illegal thing, but her friends had told her "People did it all the time and it was easy money." Lynka was being watched by French Police the whole time. She never had a chance. Busted! In jail. We were just new friends, but I got a call from a lawyer in France telling me the news, and asking me if I would please go to her house and feed her cats and tell her friends what had happened.

What occurred shocked me honestly. A phone book full of friends and everyone of them was not interested in helping her in any way. She spent one year in jail and then was released as long as she promised to stay in France. Here are stories within the story which I will tell later. For now all I will say is I thought it was terribly sad that no one would help her. I packed up her apartment and put all her stuff in storage. I sent her cats to live with her parents and I wrote her this song.

Please check out the version of Sometimes it Rains that I recorded with Lynka. It's like a house dance track. We re-wrote the song so it's a bit different than this one, but I like the two versions for different reasons. I would like to go back and re record this song with some real drums and make it a little less Backstreet Boys. What happened was... I recorded the song, and then I played it for my friend Ron Baldwin. He told me to re-do it with some Backstreet Boys harmonies and maybe they might use it on their next record. Well obviously that did not happen, but when my hard drive crashed, which I have written about on other song posts, I lost the first mix, and the original song files, so I could never go back and make the final version I wanted to make without starting all over from scratch. This song lives on my list of to be re-recorded just as soon as I finish the other 100 songs I am working on.

This demo is from around 1991. I think I may have had a little too much Seal on the brain. I like this song because it is one of the first where I started to play my own electric guitar parts on my records. I suck, but at least I did it. Anyway when I was younger it seemed I met lot of girls who liked to date jerks. I never understood why someone would want to be in a relationship where they were treated badly. I have also written much about this topic as I think my first 10 years of songs amounted to lyrically pick me pick me please please. So I am a dumb ass I know but still I wrote this song for yet another girl who told me how nice I was and what a jerk her boyfriend was. If I had a nickel for every time I heard that one.

In 2001 my roommate Matt Stein moved out of the 29th St Loft and my friend Jack DeSantis and I, tore down the old loft while I still lived in it. I packed up all my stuff and piled it into boxes and we set about the building of the new dream studio loft. Chris Gorhman www.gormanandgormanphotography.com took the other half of the loft over, and we split the space down the middle. It's pretty cool you walk in the front door and there is a giant photo studio on one side, and the space age apartment with the studio on the other side.

The first five days we spent tearing the old place apart. Next we built a dividing wall between the two spaces. Once we had that wall up, I was on my own. Me Jack, Betty my cat and all my crap piled into this space so tightly that you had to move boxes and climb over piles of stuff to get from one side to the other. It was like remodeling a storage space while it was full. It took us 6 months to build the new loft space out. After we finished, Jack and I recorded the Five Brothers Fat record as a way to learn our way around the new studio and have some fun. We spent about 3 months recording on weekends mostly, but we worked really well together. Jack is an amazing bass player and was always coming up with crazy ideas for us to try. In this track there are several swirling parts that jack played and then flipped around backwards.
